  1. Hey Bob according to my latest Lyman 49th edition 2400 is the recommended powder for a 300 grain cast. start@ 18.2 for 915 vel.Max load and their recommended load is 22.2 for 1165 fps.One other thought make sure you use magnum primers for 296.With 44mag you will find most loads use regular primers including 2400 and #9.

  2. Thanks Dirk. The 300's I have aren't cast, but jacketed hollow points. The latest Hornady manual specs Winchester WLP primers, which are magnum for all loads. Why do you recommend not using Magnum primers? I do realize that 296 has an ignition issue and requires the magnum primers and that you don't load them light. That's why I hadn't used 296 much in the past.

Hornady actually recommends 296 and a 265g flat point for the most accurate load. I'm interested to see how well it works with the heavier bullet.

  3. I was just looking through my newest manual and was surprised that the only powders they recommend magnum primers for are H 110 W 296 and h4227.For 357 they only recommend magnum primers. most likely it is because 357 uses small primers and 44 uses large. This is from lyman's #49 edition.
